What is a Federal Firearms License?
A Federal Firearms License (FFL) is a legal license in the United States which allows an individual or an organization to engage in a commercial enterprise pertaining to the import or manufacture of ammunition or firearms, or both, for personal use or for resale. A licensed dealer can engage in the business either by selling his products directly to customers, or by enrolling him in a registered sales business. As for the person who buys the firearm from a licensed dealer, he will need a FFL as proof that he has purchased the firearm from a legally authorized dealer. The purchase is subject to the law and any violation thereof can result in severe penalties, jail time, and in some cases, the confiscation of the weapon. There are certain requirements that one must fulfill before he can apply for a FFL and there are certain questions that are assumed by the applicants as they go through the processing of obtaining such a license.
Before an applicant applies for what is a federal firearms license (or any other type of license for that matter), he should undertake an interview with an agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. He can only obtain this interview after he has been provided with all the requisite information needed to facilitate the interview, and once all the requisite data have been provided, the applicant can go ahead and undergo the interview. The applicant then submits the necessary forms to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and is given the FFL after he passes the preliminary examination.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms normally takes about three months to issue the FFL to an applicant. After issue, an applicant can apply for an FFL by going through an approved private dealer, or by going through a licensed federal dealer. However, he is not required to do so, if he wants to get the federal firearm license online. An approved private dealer is usually a member of the National Firearms Association, which is one of the groups that form an industry association that regulates dealers in firearms. An FFL certificate, however, will not be granted if the applicant did not pass the written exam administered by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Once the applicant passes the written exam, he gets the FFL certificate. To what is a federal firearms license? To get this license, the applicant needs to be at least 18 years old; he must also have a permanent residence in the United States and he must have a stable job. In addition, he cannot be a member of any illegal or terrorist organization while he is applying for this license.
After getting the FFL, the applicant can now buy, sell or trade firearms with other people. If he already owns firearms, he may transfer them to someone he already owns an FFL license. Note that he still needs to pass all the other required examinations to get his license as if he were still purchasing and selling through a licensed dealer.
There are, of course, some minor requirements in order to take advantage of what is a federal firearms license. For instance, an applicant who wants to buy or sell his own gun cannot use a different name when registering it in his name than he used on his current guns. Also, an FFL holder cannot transport firearms in interstate commerce or use them during the commission of a felony. He can’t even possess an unloaded firearm in his possession. However, these are just some of the minimal requirements that an FFL holder has to meet before he can legally own a firearm.
